Emilia Pérez: From Mexican Cartel Leader to Operating Table in Tel Aviv** Emilia Pérez, once a notorious figure at the helm of a powerful Mexican drug cartel, has made an unexpected and dramatic shift from the criminal underworld to a sterile operating room in Tel Aviv. The transformation of Pérez’s life, from leading violent cartel operations to lying on a surgeon’s table in Israel, is as shocking as it is fascinating. Pérez's cartel, one of the most feared in Mexico, had its hands in a wide range of illicit activities, from drug trafficking to money laundering and extortion. Her rise to power in the cartel world was marked by ruthless tactics, earning her a reputation as one of the most formidable women in organized crime. However, following a covert operation by Israeli authorities, Pérez’s life took an unprecedented turn. She was secretly apprehended and brought to Tel Aviv, where she now finds herself at the center of an extraordinary medical procedure. The operation, shrouded in secrecy, is said to be aimed at providing Pérez with a new identity and possibly even changing her appearance to protect her from enemies in the criminal world and law enforcement. Though the details of her capture and the exact nature of her surgery remain unclear, it’s apparent that Pérez’s past has caught up with her in a way no one could have predicted. As she lies on the operating table, the once-feared cartel leader is no longer the predator, but the one in need of protection. Pérez’s story is one of redemption for some, but for others, it raises questions about the lengths to which authorities and international bodies are willing to go to dismantle criminal empires. Her fate now rests not in the hands of cartel associates, but in those of a team of surgeons working to rewrite the story of a woman who was once at the peak of a brutal empire.

Emilia Perez offers a vibrant, yet chaotic narrative that blends cartels, gender identity, and personal redemption. The film, now playing in theaters across Israel, attempts to combine the flair of a musical telenovela with the contemporary theme of a cartel leader undergoing gender-affirming surgery — a plot point that adds a layer of complexity to an otherwise wild and colorful storyline.

Visually, the film channels the extravagant styles of Pedro Almodóvar and Baz Luhrmann, where the production design and eye-catching visuals often overshadow the plot and character development.

For Israeli audiences, Emilia Perez has a unique twist, as the cartel leader — initially named Manitas (played by Karla Sofia Gascon) — selects Tel Aviv as the location for her transformative surgery. In the film, Dr. Wasserman (played by Mark Ivanir, a Ukrainian-born Israeli actor best known for his roles in Schindler’s List, Homeland, and Away) serves as the straight-talking surgeon. He helps Emilia confront her motivations for undergoing the procedure, adding depth to her journey of self-discovery and transformation.
