Out of the 40 inmates on federal death row, only three had their sentences left intact after President Joe Biden's commutations on Monday.
Three men remain on federal death row after President Joe Biden issued sweeping commutations on Monday, reducing the sentences of 37 other prisoners who were facing execution.
Biden’s decision aims to uphold his moratorium on federal executions, even as his term nears its end. While he could not fully deliver on his campaign promise to abolish the death penalty, these commutations allow him to block President-elect Donald Trump from proceeding with the executions once he takes office.
Unlike a pardon, which erases a conviction, a commutation lessens the severity of a sentence. In this case, the inmates granted commutations by Biden will now serve life sentences without the possibility of parole instead of facing execution.
