**Washington** — Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to address the nation at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday from Howard University in Washington, D.C., following her defeat to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
CBS News projects that Harris secured 222 electoral votes, falling short of the 276 needed for victory. Trump clinched the presidency early Wednesday morning, after winning key battleground states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, surpassing the 270 electoral votes required to claim the White House.
Harris had been expected to speak to supporters from Howard University, where she graduated in 1986, on election night. However, as the results poured in, she did not appear. Instead, campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond informed the crowd that Harris would address them on Wednesday.
The Nov. 5 election capped a tumultuous and historic cycle, marked by two assassination attempts against Trump and President Biden’s unexpected exit from the race in July following a poor debate performance. In the wake of Biden's withdrawal, Harris quickly launched her own campaign for president, with Democrats rallying behind her. She was formally nominated as the party's candidate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, making history as the first woman of color to lead a major party ticket.
