Person dies after getting trapped by debris at Santa Cruz County beach.

The death comes after a warning about large westerly swells along the Central Coast.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY – High surf contributed to a death on Monday at a beach in Santa Cruz County.

Authorities were called to Sunset State Beach around 11:30 a.m. on Monday after receiving a report of a person trapped under debris or a log "due to the high surf," according to California State Parks spokesperson Marty Greenstein.

Greenstein said rescuers and bystanders were able to free the person and administer CPR. He was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The individual was identified only as a male resident of Santa Cruz County.

California State Parks had issued a warning on Friday, alerting beachgoers about a series of large westerly swells expected to impact the Central Coast over the weekend and into the early part of the week.

On Monday, waves were anticipated to reach heights of 15 to 20 feet, according to an advisory.
