Gary Neville has highlighted a "massive positive" for Ruben Amorim following Manchester United's "ugly display" in their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
After a thrilling comeback victory over Manchester City in their previous Premier League match, Amorim's side suffered a poor performance, as goals from Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert, and Antoine Semenyo handed the visitors a comfortable win.
Ruben Amorim has now overseen four wins, one draw, and four losses during his brief time at Manchester United, with the challenges ahead becoming increasingly clear.
The Portuguese manager has made significant changes to his lineup, rotating players frequently, and Gary Neville pointed out that this has been a "massive positive" for Amorim. It has allowed him to quickly realize that the squad he has at his disposal simply isn't "good enough."
Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Neville explained: “I think it’s a huge positive that Ruben Amorim is seeing what he’s got.
“There have been times in the past where managers could be fooled into thinking they have a better squad than they do, due to a few decent results or a rise in the league. But this team is miles off in every sense.
“Playing the way Amorim wants—using the 3-4-3 formation—he’ll need to make changes. He’s given everyone a chance by rotating the squad, but I don’t think there will be many players he’s watched and thought, ‘Yes, I want you on the bus.’
“They’re all very mediocre, and I don’t know how it’s happened—let’s be clear, they’re better than they’re showing. But it’s becoming a pattern.
“He’s got six months to assess his options, what I’d call a 'beauty parade'—though it’s more of an ‘ugly parade.’ He’s seeing exactly what Manchester United fans have witnessed for the past decade. A cultural overhaul is absolutely necessary.”
“It’s a really tough time for them right now—there’s not much to like about their performances or the way they’re playing. The players are giving their best, and it’s not a personal attack, but the reality is they’re simply not good enough for Manchester United. This is a club that aspires to be at the top.
“Watching them, it’s clear they’re not up to the standard required.”
"In this moment, everything is incredibly difficult," said Amorim. "For a club like Manchester United to lose 3-0 at home, it’s a tough blow for everyone.
"The fans are really disappointed and weary. You can feel it in the stadium from the very first play. I understand that, but we have to face it. I sensed it from the start—there’s a lot of anxiety.
"We want to score, but we’re too nervous. After that third goal, everyone in the stadium is suffering—the fans, the players, everyone."
