A second earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.4 struck the Inland Empire at 8:17 p.m. on Saturday, following a 3.5-magnitude quake earlier in the day. The second tremor occurred about 3.7 miles northwest of Fontana.

The first earthquake hit the region at 2:17 p.m., approximately 5 miles northwest of Fontana. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or damage as of 9 p.m.

California experiences thousands of earthquakes annually, with most being minor. The state sees several hundred quakes with magnitudes of 3.0, and only about 15 to 20 reach magnitudes higher than 4.0. Alaska records more earthquakes per year than California.

What to Do in an Earthquake:

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) provides the following steps to protect yourself during an earthquake:

- Drop: Drop to your hands and knees to avoid being knocked over and to stay low.

- Cover: Use one arm to shield your head and neck, and if possible, take shelter under a sturdy table or desk. If no shelter is available, get next to an interior wall away from windows.

- Hold On: Hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops, and be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts.
