COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Tensions boiled over at Ohio Stadium on Saturday afternoon after Michigan’s 13-10 victory over No. 2 Ohio State, when Wolverines players planted their team flag at midfield, sparking a brawl between players from both teams. Police were forced to intervene, using pepper spray to separate the sides.
Videos of the incident, including footage from NBC4, show Michigan players gathering at midfield after the game’s conclusion. Encouraged by teammates, offensive lineman Raheem Anderson and running back Terrence Dunlap planted the flag, which immediately drew the ire of Ohio State players, who had been participating in the traditional post-game singing of Carmen Ohio with the marching band.
Playoff Scenarios After Ohio State’s Loss to Michigan
As players clashed, a struggle for control of the flag ensued. Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer, who had made a crucial goal-line interception in the fourth quarter, ripped the flag from its pole and threw it to the ground. Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun tried to grab the flag and walk away, only for a person in Michigan gear to attempt to reclaim it, leading to further scuffles.
“We planted the flag, and next thing you know, everybody’s getting rushed,” Michigan defensive end Josaiah Stewart said. “They had their whole team there, so there were a lot of them. Next thing you know, we’re all getting pepper-sprayed.”
Television footage showed Michigan players Tavierre Dunlap and Jason Hewlett wiping their eyes from the effects of the spray. At least one sideline member of NBC4 was also impacted. One Ohio State police officer was injured and taken to the hospital, the university confirmed.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day provided few details in his postgame press conference, saying he wasn't sure if any players were injured. "I know those guys were looking to put a flag on the field, and our guys weren’t going to let that happen," Day said.
Michigan coach Sherrone Moore acknowledged the situation, stating, “We’ve got to do a better job of handling that, as a group.”
Ohio State's police department has taken the lead on investigating the incident. The Big Ten had not issued an immediate statement, though it could impose disciplinary actions, including player suspensions.
The win marked Michigan’s fourth consecutive victory in the rivalry, extending Ohio State’s losing streak to four. The Buckeyes, now 10-2, are out of contention for the Big Ten championship game, which will take place next Saturday in Indianapolis between No. 1 Oregon and No. 4 Penn State.
However, Ohio State remains in strong contention for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff. The playoff bracket will be revealed on Dec. 8, with Ohio State’s next game likely to take place in the first round of the playoff on Dec. 20 or 21, potentially back at Ohio Stadium.
