President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Rep. Mike Waltz of Florida to serve as his national security adviser, according to sources familiar with the decision.
As national security adviser, Waltz would oversee critical geopolitical challenges facing the U.S. in Trump's second term, including the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Israel, as well as tensions with Russia, China, and Iran.
Waltz, a staunch Trump ally, is a combat-decorated Green Beret who has served in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa. If confirmed, he would become the first former Green Beret to hold the prestigious role.
This nomination, first reported by *The Wall Street Journal*, is part of Trump's broader effort to appoint loyalists to key positions in his administration, including roles such as border czar, EPA administrator, UN ambassador, and attorney general.
Waltz’s appointment also signals a shift in Trump’s approach to national security. The former president has had fraught relationships with past national security advisers, including John Bolton and Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, both of whom publicly criticized him after leaving the role. Trump’s choice this time reflects his desire to reward those who have supported him and avoid those who disagreed with his leadership during his first term.
Under Waltz’s guidance, Trump’s national security team would likely reassess U.S. policies on Ukraine, Russia, China, Iran, and the Middle East. Waltz’s foreign policy perspective is expected to align with Trump’s earlier stances, similar to that of former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
In a recent interview, Waltz highlighted concerns about the Biden administration’s handling of immigration, particularly in the aftermath of the Afghanistan withdrawal. He expressed frustration over immigrants who followed legal processes while others bypassed them, especially those who fought alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
This nomination marks a significant step in Trump’s vision for his second term, as he seeks to reshape U.S. foreign policy and security priorities.
