SPOILER ALERT: This article contains significant spoilers regarding the ending and post-credits scene of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” currently playing in theaters.
As with the endings of the first two films in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise, the third installment teases the upcoming fourth movie, set to hit theaters in 2027, with an unexpected cameo.
After Team Sonic triumphs over Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald Robotnik (both portrayed by Jim Carrey), Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) concludes his race with Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) to determine who is the fastest. Sonic easily claims victory, speeding far ahead of his friends, but soon finds himself lost in a dark forest. The situation escalates when he encounters a group of robots that bear an uncanny resemblance to him. These robots are modeled after Metal Sonic, an evil android designed by Dr. Robotnik in the video games. Metal Sonic is known as one of Robotnik’s most formidable creations, possessing all of Sonic's abilities and additional powers, such as super-strength, invisibility, chaos manipulation, and self-replication.
Fortunately, just as the Metal Sonics surround the hero, he is rescued by a cloaked figure who reveals herself to be the beloved character Amy Rose. Similar to the teases of Tails and Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves) at the end of the first two “Sonic” films, it’s evident that Amy will have a significant role in “Sonic 4.” Amy, a pink hedgehog, is often depicted as Sonic’s love interest. While she may not possess Sonic’s speed or Knuckles’ strength, she wields a massive hammer capable of defeating any opponent.
What about Shadow and the Robotniks? It seems they all meet their end in the climactic battle aboard the massive space cannon. After being betrayed by his grandfather, Ivo pushes Gerald into the energy reactor, and he and Shadow sacrifice themselves to redirect the laser away from Earth. The space station then explodes with all of them on board, but this isn't the first time Ivo has miraculously escaped death; he also returned after seemingly vanishing at the end of “Sonic 2.” However, the final post-credits scene confirms that Shadow survived the explosion and makes his way back to Earth, paving the way for his appearance in “Sonic 4.”
Ben Schwartz remained tight-lipped about what “Sonic 4” might entail, but he hinted that it will be “beautiful” and distinct from the first three films.
“The elements we hint at at the end of this film are exactly what I hope we explore in the fourth installment. There's a beautiful storyline to be developed that will take our movie in a completely new direction,” he shared. “What makes these films exciting is that each one feels like a different genre. The first one is sort of a buddy comedy, the second has an adventure vibe akin to ‘Indiana Jones,’ and this one introduces a darker tone with Shadow. The next film can adopt an entirely different atmosphere. It's just fantastic. Plus, we have the opportunity to bring in amazing actors to portray new characters, which is incredibly exciting.”
