Nearly 900 flights have already been canceled as tornado watches have been issued in Texas and Louisiana.
As the U.S. prepares for one of its busiest travel weekends of the year, severe weather has already caused hundreds of flight cancellations.
Tornado watches were issued on Thursday in the southern states of Texas and Louisiana, according to CNN. The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered ground stops at two Texas airports, as reported by CBS. Texas Governor Greg Abbott activated emergency response resources in the state on Thursday.
The National Weather Service noted in a post on X, "Several areas across the U.S. are being monitored for potential hazardous weather spanning a few days around New Year’s Day."
On Thursday, nearly 800 flights were canceled in the U.S., with over 90 more cancellations reported on Friday, according to FlightAware. Additionally, seven flights have been canceled preemptively for Saturday.
In a video shared on X, Evan Bentley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, emphasized that a "severe weather threat" is anticipated for east Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama this upcoming weekend. While specifics regarding the intensity of the threat and the "exact corridor" remain uncertain, Bentley expressed growing concern over the likelihood of significant storms producing severe weather on Saturday.
“We expect multiple rounds of storms with potential hazards including hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes,” Bentley stated. “Given the busy holiday travel period, it's crucial for anyone in or traveling through that area to be aware of the weather risks.”
He advised, “If you plan to be in that region on Saturday, ensure you have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings, and keep an eye on the forecast for any changes as the situation develops.”
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), nearly 40 million travelers are expected to be screened between December 19 and January 2, marking an increase from last year. The TSA noted that Friday, December 27, is projected to be one of the three busiest days during this period.
Additionally, AAA predicts that over 100 million people will travel at least 50 miles (80 km) between December 21 and January 1.
