ATLANTA (AP) — After a three-month stretch without a winner and a jackpot that soared past a billion dollars during the holiday season, the Mega Millions game finally has at least one lucky winner.
The winning ticket matched the white balls 3, 7, 37, 49, and 55, along with the gold Mega Ball 6 drawn on Friday night. The identity of the winner or winners is not yet known, but the ticket was sold in Cottonwood, California.
“Congratulations to our $1.22 billion jackpot winner from California,” said Joshua Johnston, lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium. “What an amazing gift this holiday season! At such a special time of year, this is not only a significant moment for our winner but also for all the wonderful organizations and causes that benefit from lottery ticket sales across the country.”
According to Mega Millions, this marks only the fourth jackpot win in 2024, and with just one more drawing left this year, it’s possible that this will be the year with the fewest jackpots since the game’s inception in 2002.
For the next drawing on Tuesday, December 31, the jackpot will reset to the starting value of $20 million ($9 million cash). Historically, there has never been a Mega Millions jackpot win on New Year’s Eve.
