The voluntary recall, issued last month, involves 10,800 cartons of Handsome Brook Farms eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised label.
The FDA defines a Class I recall as one where there is "a reasonable probability" that the recalled product "will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
The recall was initiated after Handsome Brook Farms discovered that eggs not intended for retail distribution were mistakenly packaged and sold in retail packaging, according to a statement from the company.
As of the Nov. 27 recall announcement, no illnesses had been reported.
The recall applies to 24-count packages of Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised eggs with a UPC of 9661910680.
According to the recall announcement, only cartons marked with Julian code 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025, are affected.
"No other products are impacted by this recall," the announcement clarified.
Where Were the Recalled Eggs Sold?
The recall announcement specifies that the affected eggs were sold in 25 Costco stores across the following states:
- Alabama
- Georgia
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
Customers who purchased the recalled eggs should return them to their local Costco for a full refund or dispose of the product, according to the announcement.
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. These symptoms typically appear between six hours and six days after infection and can last for four to seven days, according to the CDC.
Children under 5, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of experiencing severe infections if they contract salmonella, the FDA warns.
