Darren Rizzi was livid.
The New Orleans Saints were hoping to put some points on the board before halftime during Monday night's game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, but their efforts fell short as they went into the locker room trailing 21-0.
It wasn’t for a lack of opportunity. The Saints were moving the ball toward field goal range when a pass from Spencer Rattler to Kevin Austin Jr. was fumbled out of bounds. However, the team took its time getting back to the line of scrimmage for the next play, all while the clock continued to run.
By the time Darren Rizzi and the coaching staff realized the clock hadn’t stopped and called a timeout, 31 seconds had already ticked away. Rizzi was furious that the clock situation wasn’t communicated to him, but his frustration went unnoticed. With just 15 seconds left in the half, Rattler took a costly sack, pushing the Saints out of field goal range and forcing them to burn their final timeout.
The ensuing Hail Mary attempt fell short, not even reaching the end zone, and the Saints entered the locker room with their heads down. Rizzi was livid, and fans on social media were quick to criticize him for his lack of awareness regarding the clock situation.
