Austin Reaves drove past Andrew Wiggins to score a game-winning layup with one second left, leading the Lakers to a 115-113 victory over the Warriors at Chase Center.
The game remained close for most of the night, but the Lakers surged ahead with a 7-0 run, taking a 104-94 lead with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter. However, Steph Curry quickly brought Golden State back, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 113, exploiting a defensive lapse by the Lakers on the second shot with 6.3 seconds remaining.
Reaves, who finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, delivered the clutch play to secure the win for the Lakers, who were 4.5-point underdogs at BetMGM.
Curry led the Warriors with 38 points and 8 three-pointers, while Andrew Wiggins added 21 points. Newly acquired Dennis Schröder struggled offensively, shooting just 3-of-10 for 11 points, but contributed five assists and played solid defense.
LeBron James made history on Christmas Day, becoming the first player in NBA history to surpass 500 career Christmas Day points. He finished Wednesday’s game with 31 points, 10 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, though he was quiet in the final moments.
Anthony Davis suffered an ankle injury early in the game, playing just seven minutes before being ruled out for the rest of the night.
76ers Deliver Holiday Shock to Celtics
The Boston Celtics faced a tough Christmas Day challenge, falling 118-114 to the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden.
Despite dominating the boards with a 51-39 rebound advantage and shooting 40.8% from beyond the arc (20-of-49), the Celtics struggled with 12 turnovers compared to just six by the 76ers. Boston also had difficulty getting to the free-throw line, making only eight of their 13 attempts.
Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 33 points on 12-of-23 shooting, along with 12 assists and three steals. Joel Embiid contributed 27 points (8-of-15 shooting) and nine rebounds, while Caleb Martin had a standout performance with 23 points, shooting 8-of-11 (7-of-9 from three).
Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum combined for 55 points, 22 rebounds, and eight assists but also committed eight turnovers between them, and struggled to find their rhythm. The absence of Jrue Holiday, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury, was noticeable.
The Celtics mounted an 11-0 run in the final minutes, narrowing the 76ers’ lead to 108-105 with 2:25 left. However, Philadelphia held on, hitting crucial free throws to seal the win.
Wemby Shines, But Knicks Hold On for Win
All eyes were on Victor Wembanyama as he made his Christmas Day debut in New York, and the second-year star did not disappoint.
Wembanyama put on a scoring clinic, finishing with 42 points, just shy of the Christmas Day debut record of 45 set by rookie Wilt Chamberlain in 1959. However, the New York Knicks held strong in the final moments to secure a 117-114 victory.
Mikal Bridges had a standout performance, leading the Knicks with 41 points on 17-of-25 shooting, including six three-pointers. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns combined for 41 points to support the win.
Wembanyama also contributed 18 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks for San Antonio, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Knicks’ late-game execution.
New York, who were 9.5-point favorites, improved to 20-10, while the Spurs dropped to 15-15.
Timberwolves Hold Off Mavericks
Not every game lived up to the hype, as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Dallas Mavericks 105-99 in a Christmas Day matchup that saw Luka Dončić leave the game with a strained left calf in the second quarter. Dončić did not return, and the Mavericks are bracing for him to miss a significant amount of time.
The Timberwolves controlled the game for most of the night but allowed the Mavericks to make a late push, getting outscored 31-15 in the fourth quarter. Despite the Mavericks’ rally, Minnesota held on for the win.
Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle combined for 49 points, 18 rebounds, and 13 assists, leading the Timberwolves. Kyrie Irving led Dallas with 39 points on 14-of-27 shooting, including five three-pointers, while Dončić had 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists before his injury.
