Dozens Feared Dead Following Plane Crash in Kazakhstan with 67 People Onboard

Russia’s state aviation authority reported that the Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft was attempting to make an emergency landing. According to Kazakh authorities, at least 29 individuals survived the incident.

Authorities in Kazakhstan reported that dozens of people were feared dead after a jet with 62 passengers and five crew members crashed near the city of Aktau on Wednesday.

Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry reported that at least 29 individuals survived the crash, including two children, and they have been hospitalized with various injuries. An unverified video shared by RIA Novosti, a Russian state news agency, showed rescue efforts, with injured passengers being pulled from the wreckage. The footage depicted some individuals lying on the ground while others managed to walk away from the aircraft.

The emergency ministry released photos from the scene, revealing firefighters searching through the debris. One image appeared to show the tail of the plane mostly intact, although it was detached from the fuselage.

According to Russia’s state aviation authority, the Azerbaijan Airlines plane was attempting an emergency landing in Aktau after colliding with a flock of birds. The airline stated that the aircraft crashed approximately 1.8 miles from Aktau. Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry announced that an investigation into the causes of the crash had been initiated.

Later on Wednesday, Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed it had launched a criminal investigation and sent a team of investigators to the site. Similar criminal probes were also initiated in Russia and Kazakhstan.
