Singer Khalid has come out as gay, revealing he decided to publicly share his sexuality after being outed.
The 26-year-old, seven-time Grammy nominee, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday night to address the situation, stating he was neither "ashamed" of his sexuality nor "hiding anything." He also emphasized that his personal life is "nobody's business."
In his first post, Khalid shared a rainbow flag emoji followed by three exclamation marks and wrote, “there yall go. next topic please lol.”
When one user responded with, "Wait hope Mr. Khalid isn’t GEHHH!” Khalid quoted the comment and replied, “I am! And that’s okay.”
“I got outted [sic] and the world still keeps turning. Let’s get this straight (lmao): I am not ashamed of my sexuality! In reality, it ain’t nobody’s business! But I am okay with me,” Khalid wrote, adding a black heart emoji and signing off with, “love y’all.”
He later addressed comments suggesting he had been hiding his sexuality, stating, “The closet was glass, baby. But we accept you. It’s not about who you love, it’s about your artistry!”
Khalid responded in another post, saying, “I wasn’t hiding anything! It’s just not any of your business.”
After a fan defended him on X, saying Khalid "didn't need to TELL nobody," the singer responded with gratitude, writing, “thank you!!!! I was never hiding.”
Khalid then signed off with a separate post, saying, “aight love y’all thank y’all I’m off this.”
Speculation about who might have outed Khalid quickly spread after his revelation. Many fans pointed to rapper and singer Hugo Almonte as the culprit. Almonte, 28, who is openly bisexual, had posted a photo of himself with Khalid less than 30 minutes before Khalid’s first post.
Almonte later took to X, writing, “B–ch ass lied and said that I broke into his house ‘cause I didn’t want him.”
The post was part of a series of messages in which Almonte made derogatory comments about "one of your favorite gay rappers," suggesting that he and the unnamed individual had a sexual encounter.
Khalid quickly received an outpouring of support from fans online.
“Getting outed is horrible!” one fan wrote. “I’m sorry you had to go through that! We love and support you!”
Another fan commented, “You’re amazing! To the person who outted [sic] you, they’re clearly miserable with themselves. You keep doing you!!”
Khalid, who was named one of Time’s Most Influential People in 2019, has built an impressive career in the music industry. His sophomore album Free Spirit debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA. The album's title track reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his earlier hits “Location” and “Young Dumb & Broke” topped the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart at #2 and #1, respectively.
The Post has reached out to Khalid's representatives for comment.
